« Pourquoi ne font-ils plus de films comme celui-ci ? » C'est une histoire au rythme délicat de deux sœurs vieillissantes - Ursula (Dame Judi Dench) et Janet (Maggie Smith - qui vivent ensemble sur une plage de Cornwall en 1936. Ils découvrent un étranger échoué sur le rivage (Daniel Bruhl), et tout en allaitant de retour à la santé font une découverte étonnante : le jeune homme, un Polonais, est un violoniste surdoué.
Et Ursula trouve ses sentiments pour la mangue bien plus profonds que simplement maternels. L'écrivain et réalisateur Charles Dance a fait des débuts admirables. Ladies in Lavender est une histoire tendre et douce-amère d'innocence et de regret. Bien que le dialogue semble parfois trop sérieux et qu'il se fie trop à la cinématographie au ralenti, il laisse toujours à ses deux talentueux acteurs suffisamment de temps et d'espace pour briller.
Il est seulement regrettable que plus d'efforts n'aient pas été consacrés à la sortie DVD du film : les extras ne sont constitués que de extraits sonores de la distribution et de l'équipe, qui ajoutent peu de perspicacité. --Ted Kord
